D1S vs D3S Xenon HID Bulbs: 6000K Upgrade Guide (UK)

D1S vs D3S Xenon HID Bulbs: 6000K Upgrade Guide (UK)

See better at night with the right xenon bulb. If your factory HID lights are getting dim, flickering or turning pink/blue, it’s time to replace the capsules. This quick guide explains D1S vs D3S, why many drivers choose 6000K, and how to fit new bulbs safely.

D1S vs D3S — what’s the difference?

Both are OEM HID (xenon) capsules, but they are not interchangeable.

D1S – Base PK32d-2 with integrated igniter. Used on many vehicles from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW and more.

D3S – Base PK32d-5, mercury-free, different voltage/connector to D1S. Common on newer models from VAG, Ford, GM, etc.

How to check: Look at the printing on your old bulb or the owner’s manual. If it says D1S, use D1S; if it says D3S, use D3S.

Why 6000K?

Kelvin (K) measures colour temperature, not brightness.

6000K = crisp white light with a modern look and strong road contrast.

4300–5000K is slightly warmer; 7000K+ looks bluer and can reduce useful output.
TTRP Racing’s 6000K capsules are a balanced choice for everyday night driving.

Signs your xenon bulbs need replacing

Dim output vs. when new

Colour shift to pink/purple, or one side looks different

Flicker or intermittent strike

Very old bulbs (4–6+ years of use)

Replace in pairs so colour and brightness match.

Quick install tips

Switch off the car, allow ballasts to discharge.

Wear gloves—don’t touch the glass.

Swap one side at a time to avoid mix-ups.

Ensure the bulb is fully seated and the connector clicks.

Test lights before refitting covers.

Note: Designed as direct replacements for factory HID systems. Always follow your vehicle’s manual and local road regulations.
